Beautification Committee

The Beautification Committee is dedicated to enhancing the aesthetics and ambience of our neighborhood. Through your membership, additional contributions, and volunteer work we all succeed. We make sure our community looks and feels welcoming to all residents and visitors. One of our notable efforts includes the carefully maintained median rose bushes, from 52nd – 59th St along 1st Ave, which add a touch of streetside elegance. Our commitment to maintaining and beautifying the Sutton Area Community is unwavering. We believe that a visually pleasing and litter-free environment fosters a stronger sense of community and well-being.

Updates:

The Rose Bush medians, from 52^nd St – 59^th St on 1^st Ave are in full bloom! It is through our care of pruning, fertilizing, and watering they are thriving and getting healthier every year!
We are also monitoring any graffiti in the neighborhood and remove it as it shows up. We continue to ensure a cleaner and more visually appealing environment for our residents and visitors.
We have hired two men who clean up litter 3 days a week in the neighborhood. They clean the litter on the sidewalks, and in the bike and bus lanes, they also work to keep the trash bins clean and graffiti free keeping our community clean and litter free. Say hello, if you should see them!

Government Committee

We prioritize regular communication with our elected officials to stay informed about issues affecting the Sutton Area Community. Through close collaboration with Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Councilwoman Julie Menin, Councilman Keith Powers, State Senator Liz Krueger, and State Assemblyman Alex Bores, we ensure that our community concerns are addressed promptly and effectively. This collaborative effort involves attending Community Board 6 meetings and working closely with city agencies such as NYC Parks, DOT, and DSNY.

These partnerships are instrumental in our ongoing efforts to prioritize safety and security within our community. We recognize the importance of maintaining well-maintained spaces, including the recently opened Esplanade (Greenway) at 54th Street, and work diligently to ensure they remain welcoming and secure environments for all residents and visitors. Through proactive engagement with our elected officials and city agencies, we strive to uphold the quality of life and sense of belonging in the Sutton Area Community.

Updates:

SAC has successfully replaced all trash bins, with rodent proof trash bins on every corner throughout our neighborhood. This occurred after months of collaboration with local council members Julie Menin and Keith Powers in conjunction with the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

Memberships/ Merchants Committee

Membership is a cornerstone of the vibrant and welcoming community of Sutton Place. It encompasses the upkeep and nurturing of our beautiful rose bushes, the essential task of keeping our streets and sidewalks clean from litter, and numerous other contributions that enrich the value of being a member. Individual memberships play a crucial role, while the support from neighborhood merchants serves as the sturdy backbone of the Sutton Area Community, reinforcing its strength and vitality. Together, these memberships contribute to creating a thriving and cohesive neighborhood that residents and visitors alike can enjoy and appreciate.

17th Precinct/Public Safety Committee

November 11, 2024

Crime Statistics:

Overall Crime Reduction: Down by 15%.
Robberies: Down by half year-to-date in a 28-day period, with 3 incidents compared to 8.
Retail & Transit Crime: Decline observed. Retail crime is undergoing reclassification from misdemeanor to felony (Burglary 3 charge) to facilitate prosecution.
General Burglaries: Down by approximately 50%.
Grand Larceny: Increased by 17%, primarily due to:
- Identity theft and mail-check interception.
- Package thefts in building lobbies; residents are encouraged to schedule deliveries when home.
- A key suspect was apprehended and currently in federal custody.
Scams: Increase in false promise scams. Residents are advised to verify callers and emails, particularly regarding gift card scams. Call the precinct and they will offer assistance.

Quality of Life Initiatives:

Moped Confiscations: Up 608 year-to-date, from 323; the 17th Precinct leads Manhattan in moped confiscations.
Bike Enforcement & Summons: Increased by 48%.
Personnel Shortages: NYPD personnel numbers are reduced; traffic agents lack authority to issue summons, but the NYPD Bike Team is actively issuing them.

Traffic & Safety Measures:

Speeding: NYPD has implemented speed traps.
Verbal Disputes: Residents are advised to avoid involvement in disputes and let the police handle potential escalations.

The 17th Precinct continues to address these issues with targeted measures to improve safety and quality of life for residents.

The 17th Precinct of the NYPD is tasked with maintaining and promoting public safety in the Sutton Area Community. Their area of responsibility includes a bustling section of Midtown Manhattan, with landmark Times Square, portions of the Theater District, and the Sutton Place neighborhood. Recent Updates.

Overall crime is down 18.4% from year-to-date last year, 98 less indexed crimes.
This means, fewer double-parked vehicles, less bicycles on the sidewalks, less reckless scooters.
Prime Officers are giving out leaflets addressing “Quality of Life” issues, stating there are No amplified electronics or drinking allowed on the streets.
Regarding summonses written, just in the last 28 days, they are up 178%, 88 more summonses have been written.
They have been impounding many scooters weekly, for example today June 25^th they took 40 scooters to the pound, with 15 more to go. This week alone they impounded 38 scooters.
Regarding package thefts, Captain Clamp recommends for safety do not buzz anyone into your building you don’t know. Always pick up your packages, and never leave them in the vestibule area.
Bicycle moving violations are also up 140% year to date, red-light violations are up 80% – that is 400 summonses, with an additional 116 that have been issued. Specifically bicycles, going through red lights.
Regarding telephone scams, do not give and advise your relatives not to give anyone your private information over the phone. Anyone who is legitimate will never ask for your private information over the phone.
In collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office, the 17^th Precinct was instrumental in closing 2 unlicensed marijuana shops, Convenience 56^th store on 1^st Ave and the Smoke Shop on 1^st Ave/54-55^th St. Thank you, 17^th Precinct, for these successful operations!
